WhisperKOOL Series Compared
The three questions that decide most cellars: how big is the room, who will install it, and how much sound is acceptable inside it. Start there, then confirm the size with a heat-load check.

Self-Contained vs. Split vs. Ducted: Which WhisperKOOL Is Right for You?
Every WhisperKOOL does the same job — holds your cellar at a steady temperature without drying out corks the way a household AC would. What differs is where the noisy parts live, and who has to install them.
Simplest install
Self-contained, through the wall
Compressor and evaporator share one housing that mounts between wall studs. Cool air goes into the cellar; heat exhausts into the room behind it, so that room needs space and airflow to absorb it.
- No licensed HVAC technician required
- Lowest cost to buy and install
- Most audible option inside the cellar
- SC PRO, Slimline and Extreme series
Quiet & efficient
Ductless split
The noisy condenser moves outdoors or to a garage, connected by refrigerant lines to a quiet evaporator on the cellar wall or ceiling. Often the most efficient way to cool a cellar.
- Installed by a licensed HVAC/R technician
- Condenser can sit outdoors
- Wall-mount or ceiling-mount evaporators
- Platinum Split and Ceiling Mount series
Invisible & near-silent
Fully ducted
The unit lives in a mechanical room or attic up to 25 ft away, and ducts carry cool air in and warm air out. Nothing to see in the cellar and very little to hear.
- Self-contained or split versions
- Best aesthetics, lowest cellar noise
- Runs near 25 ft lose capacity, so size up
- Extreme tiR, Blow-Through, Platinum Ducted, Quantum

We check the heat load
Open the calculatorWe calculate how much heat your cellar gains, the number that actually decides the unit size. You can run a first pass yourself with our calculator.
-
You get one or two clear options
With the reasons behind them: who can install it, how it will sound in the cellar, and the full cost including ducting kits or condensers.

Questions, answered
WhisperKOOL Cooling FAQs
Straight answers from the team that sizes and installs these units every week.
Which WhisperKOOL system is right for my wine cellar?
It comes down to room size, who will install it, and how quiet the cellar needs to be. Self-contained units (SC PRO, Slimline, Extreme) are the simplest and most affordable. Split systems move the noisy condenser outside. Ducted systems hide the equipment entirely. The comparison table above lays out each series, or ask us for a recommendation.
How do I know what size WhisperKOOL unit I need?
Size the unit to your cellar's heat load, not just its cubic feet. Insulation, glass or stone walls, exterior walls, lighting, how often the door opens, and the temperature outside the cellar all add heat. Use our heat-load calculator for a first estimate, then confirm with a specialist.
Can I install a WhisperKOOL cooling unit myself?
Self-contained through-the-wall units can be installed without a licensed technician. All split and ducted split systems must be installed by a licensed HVAC/R technician.
What's the difference between a self-contained and a split system?
A self-contained unit keeps the evaporator and compressor in one housing that mounts through the wall. A split system separates them: the condenser goes somewhere better suited to heat and noise (outdoors or a garage) and connects to a quiet evaporator in or near the cellar with refrigerant lines.
How far can a WhisperKOOL be ducted from the cellar?
Generally up to 25 feet. Longer duct runs lose cooling capacity, so if you're near that limit, size the unit up. Check your owner's manual for the maximum duct length of your model.
How loud are WhisperKOOL units?
Self-contained and wall-mounted split evaporators make some noise inside the cellar, because mechanical equipment is in or on the cellar wall. Fully ducted and ducted split systems place the unit away from the cellar and are the quietest choice.
What temperature and humidity should a wine cellar be kept at?
About 55°F and around 60% relative humidity. Steady conditions matter as much as the numbers: big swings make wine expand and contract, stressing the cork. Hot climates, glass walls or poor insulation can make these targets harder to hold.
Does a WhisperKOOL control humidity?
No. WhisperKOOL units don't add humidity, but they're designed to conserve moisture far better than a household air conditioner. A complete vapor barrier built into the cellar is the best way to keep humidity stable.
Do I need to install the bottle probe?
Yes. WhisperKOOL systems read the liquid temperature of a bottle, not the air, which prevents short-cycling and extends the unit's life. The only exception is if you've added a 24V thermostat conversion kit.
What is the WhisperKOOL warranty?
Self-contained units carry a limited 2-year warranty, with up to an extra 6-month grace period for installation, and a 5-year compressor warranty. Split systems carry a limited 2-year warranty with up to an extra 1-year grace period for installation. The warranty becomes valid once installation documentation is submitted to and approved by WhisperKOOL.
What electrical service does a WhisperKOOL need?
Plan on a dedicated 20-amp circuit; a single-appliance surge protector is also recommended. On split systems, the condensing unit needs its own dedicated circuit.
Is Wine Cellar HQ an authorized WhisperKOOL dealer?
Yes. Wine Cellar HQ is an authorized dealer for WhisperKOOL and every brand we sell, so your unit carries the full manufacturer warranty. We also design, install and service wine cellars, and we'll match any advertised price. Call 888-589-1833.
